Cooling in this climate
Western Washington summers used to be short. They still are not Phoenix. They are warm enough, often enough, that a lot of houses without cooling are uncomfortable in July and August — especially upper floors, west-facing rooms, and tighter new construction. That is a comfort issue, especially at night.
If your furnace is in decent shape and you mainly want cooling, a conventional AC coil and condenser can be the direct answer. If the furnace is due for replacement anyway, or you are on electric heat, a heat pump usually does both jobs with one outdoor unit. Homes without ducts are often a better fit for ductless mini-splits.
What we check before we bid cooling
Cooling capacity is not “the same tonnage as the neighbor.” We look at:

Window area, orientation, and upstairs vs. downstairs

Existing ductwork — supply, return, and whether it can move enough air in cooling mode

Electrical service and condenser placement

Whether the furnace coil, if any, is compatible

How you actually use the house on a hot afternoon
Undersized ducts that “worked” for heat often show up as noisy, weak cooling. We would rather fix airflow than hang a larger condenser on a system that cannot deliver the air.
Install work includes placing the outdoor unit, setting the coil or indoor unit, refrigerant piping, electrical, condensate, and commissioning. On new construction and retrofit we plan the cooling load with the heating load, not as an afterthought. Projects includes both heat-pump and conventional-system work.

Utility incentives, when they exist, are more often written around heat pumps than around cooling-only AC. Amounts change. See rebates and incentives. Do not count on a federal 25C credit for equipment placed in service in 2026.
Air conditioning FAQs
Do I need a separate air conditioner if I get a heat pump? Usually no. A heat pump is an air conditioner that also runs in reverse for heat. That is why so many of our cooling jobs here are heat pump installs.
Can you add AC to my existing furnace? Often, if the furnace, coil space, ducts, and electrical support it. Sometimes the furnace is the weak link and replacing both is cleaner. We will not add a condenser onto ducts that cannot move the air.
How long does an AC install take? A straightforward add-on is often one to two days. Electrical upgrades, coil changes, or duct repairs add time. We put the schedule in the proposal.
Will you service the system after install? Yes. Cooling coils, condensate, and outdoor units need periodic attention in this damp climate. See HVAC maintenance.
