A ductless mini-split is a heat pump that does not use a central duct system. An outdoor unit connects to one or more wall, floor, or ceiling indoor heads. Each head serves a room or zone. That is different from a ducted heat pump, which uses the home’s ducts the way a furnace does.

Ductless is often the better tool when:

The house has no ducts (electric baseboard, wall heaters, or a boiler)

You are finishing an ADU, bonus room, garage conversion, or addition

One or two rooms are always too hot or too cold and the rest of the house is fine

You want independent control by room without opening up ceilings for new ductwork
A mini-split is not a window air conditioner. It heats and cools. It is a permanent install: line set, condensate, electrical, mounting, and commissioning.
How a mini-split install goes
We start with the building: orientation, insulation, windows, and how you use each room. Then we choose head count and outdoor capacity. Too few heads, and some rooms never catch up. Too many, and you pay for equipment you do not need.
Install work typically includes:

What a mini-split will not do
It will not heat the whole house from one living-room head. Closed doors and long hallways still matter. Even temperatures in every bedroom through ducts is a ducted heat pump or furnace-plus-AC conversation. Indoor filters need cleaning; outdoor coils need to stay clear. See HVAC maintenance.

Ductless mini-split FAQs
Can one outdoor unit serve several rooms? Yes. Multi-zone systems pair one outdoor unit with several indoor heads. Each head needs a real load. We will not stack extra heads just to make a proposal look complete.
Do mini-splits work in a Western Washington winter? Yes, when they are sized and installed for this climate. Outdoor placement, line-set length, and defrost behavior matter.
Can ductless replace my furnace? Sometimes, if you are willing to put heads in the rooms you actually live in. Sometimes a furnace stays and ductless covers an addition. Sometimes a ducted heat pump is cleaner. We will walk the house and say which.
How long does installation take? A single-zone job is often one day. Multi-zone work, long line-set runs, or electrical upgrades take longer. We confirm the schedule in the proposal.
Do you install ductless in commercial spaces? Yes, for light commercial rooms, offices, and small tenant spaces where a full rooftop replacement is not the job.
