Bellingham houses are not Ferndale houses
Bellingham’s older neighborhoods — Fairhaven, the Lettered Streets, South Hill, and similar — often have no ducts, undersized ducts, or a furnace shoehorned into a basement or closet that was never meant for today’s equipment. A lot of those jobs are ductless mini-splits or a careful retrofit, not a like-for-like box swap. Newer areas along the Guide and Barkley, and new construction in Ferndale, are a different problem: get the load, the ducts, and the outdoor placement right while the house is still open.
Lynden and the rural edges of the county add shops, outbuildings, and larger lots. Outdoor units have more room, but line-set length, freeze protection, and how the shop is actually used still decide the design. We will not copy a Bellingham bungalow layout onto a Lynden shop and call it a system.
Climate, fuel, and utilities here
Whatcom is cooler and often windier than south Snohomish, with the same wet winters. Heat has to work. Cooling is still a real request on upper floors and in tighter new houses. Many of those cooling jobs are heat pumps. Furnaces remain common where Cascade Natural Gas already serves the building. Dedicated AC still shows up when the furnace is staying.
Residential electric in most of Whatcom County is Puget Sound Energy. The City of Blaine and the City of Sumas run their own electric utilities. Whatcom PUD is not a typical house-power provider. Natural gas, where you have it, is often Cascade Natural Gas. Rebate paperwork follows whoever is on your bill — rebates and incentives. We help with the forms; we do not invent the amounts.

Do you drive up from Snohomish County for a Bellingham job? Yes. Whatcom is part of the service area. If a job is a poor fit for distance or scope, we will say so before you spend time on a bid.
My 1920s house has no ducts. What do you usually recommend? Often ductless, sometimes a small ducted system if we can run it cleanly, sometimes a mix. It depends on the floor plan and what you want the bedrooms to do. We will not run a giant trunk through a finished house because it is easier to bid.
Can you coordinate with a Whatcom County builder? Yes. New construction HVAC is core work. Send plans early.
